About the Project

TREADS is a current research effort underway
at Eastern Michigan University. The goal is to provide a
system that can help those with reading disabilites have
better access to text. Partial support for this project has been provided by Dell Computer. |
The Authors
Nik Estep

Nik is an undergraduate student from Columbus, OH. He is
studying in the Computer Science Education program at
Eastern Michigan University. TREADS is Nik's Undergraduate Research Fellowship work under the direction of Dr. Sverdlik. With any luck, he'll graduate after the Fall 2011 semester. |
Michael Jahn

Mike graduated from the Computer Science program at Eastern in the Winter of 2008. He contributed to the user interface component of TREADS as part of his senior project. Mike is now employed as a Systems Engineer for an electronic content management company in Michigan. Mike also enjoys playing Ultimate frisbee, guitar, and skiing. |
Karen Schulte![]()

Karen teaches in the Department of Special Education at Eastern Michigan University. Her research interests include reading instruction for students with learning disabilities, overrepresentation of minority students in special education and understanding the underlying processing issues related to learning disabilities. In her spare time, Karen enjoys reading, cooking, gardening and playing the piano. |
Erik Schweller![]()

Erik was a computer science graduate student. He did
his undergraduate studies at the
University of Idaho, also in computer science. When
not programming, Erik takes photos and spends time with
his wonderful wife. TREADS was Erik's master's thesis project under the direction of Dr. Sverdlik. He graduated after the Fall 2008 semester at EMU. |
William Sverdlik, Ph.D.![]()

Bill received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Wayne State University and has been teaching at Eastern Michigan University since 1999. His research interests include information retrieval, data mining , autonomous agents, artificial intelligence and robotics. In his spare time, Bill enjoys birdwatching and playing the cello. |
